The Mushroom Farm

Deerhoof Gardens grows fresh oyster mushrooms year-round indoors on organically grown straw sourced from local farmers. We also have a seasonal selection of other mushroom species, such as lion’s mane and shiitake, grown outdoors on logs.

We Eat Invasives!

We are experimenting with using invasive plant species as alternative growing substrates. Harvesting these plants helps to reduce their populations and start to heal the local ecosystem. So far, Chinese silvergrass (Miscanthus sinensis) and Japanese stiltgrass (Microstegium vimineum) have proven to be suitable mushroom food.
